What Can We Learn From Our Tribal Ancestors?

By Blogpost, Entrepreneurship

There was a great article that was sent to me during the week about how a company in the USA uses traditional tribal practices to help business leaders strategize business processes, agree on major decisions, and enrol whole teams to guide their business forward. It was a great article!

It also started to make me think how GoalsTribe has similar principles in that business owners coming together to share experiences, knowledge, goals to help them grow and manage their business. Also the use of a tribal leader (coach) that facilitates the session, making sure they keep on track and are outcomed focused.

Business can learn so much from different environments and context’s. Not just tribes, but also the sporting arena – working as a team, having a common goal, strategies, etc etc… Taking the lessons from these different arenas, and implementing them makes business more enjoyable and approaching it from a different angle.

Using this tribal example, what else can we learn from these ancient ancestors that can help our business grow?

Collaborative thinking – groups of people working together to solve problems.

Listening – each person that speaks holds the “talking stick” and everyone’s attention is on that person, not thinking about their own points or views, but actively listening to the person speaking and assisting that person solve the specific problem.

Tribal leader – someone that brings the group together, and facilitates the session, which allows everyone to contribute and provide value.

Do you have any other ideas or initiatives that we can learn from our ancient tribes? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Till next time

Finding Opportunity

By Blogpost, opportunities

Some goals are straightforward. You move from Point A to Point B and you know exactly what to do and and what to expect. Other goals require being flexible, alert and ready to jump anytime an opportunity arises.

If you are struggling with the idea of being able to spot opportunities and having the courage to act on them, here are some tips to motivate you:

Set clear goals. If you know exactly what you want, you will automatically be on the lookout for exactly the right people and resources.

Visualize. Your brain needs specific commands about what to look for. For example, when you want a new car and you decide on a particular make and model, you suddenly start noticing them everywhere. How is it you never noticed that so many people were driving the car you want? You might be surprised about this, but it’s just your brain’s normal filtering system – if it doesn’t matter to you, it literally doesn’t appear for you! So set a clear goal and visualize it. Whether it’s a tangible goal (like a car) or intangible (like health), having a strong and clear visual will give your brain the command to seek out the conditions that will make the goal happen. A HUGE component of this is belief. You MUST believe that your goal is achievable in order for your brain to focus on it; otherwise, you give it contradictory instructions every time you doubt!

Prepare. Be prepared to say “yes” even when you’re terrified and believe you’re not ready. Learn to swim on the way to the island. Of course if the opportunity you seek requires funding, make sure it’s all in place before you start. And if you don’t have the funding, focus your attention on making that funding a goal so your brain is primed to hunt for ways to make funding appear for you.

Do something… Seizing opportunity does NOT mean sitting on your bum waiting for things to fall into your lap. You have to be out there, circulating in the world, making a name for yourself so that people GIVE you work, point you in the right direction, etc. Sure, having a rich old uncle helps but only if you’re the beloved nephew…

…and DO nothing. Spend time meditating and focusing your mind on what you want. There is a time for doing and a time for NOT doing; just ‘being’ and contemplating. Focus your mind and supercharge your intention with a command of “This is what I want NOW.”

ALL people matter. Don’t discount somebody just because on the surface they don’t seem like the “right” person. You may miss out on amazing opportunities because you made a wrong judgment about someone.

Open your mind, eyes and ears. Be an active participant in the world. Immerse yourself in ideas that interest you. Don’t discount ideas just because they don’t fit in with your pre-conceived notions. Always remember – if it caught your attention, it did so for a reason. Even if you can’t find the reason right away, know that what you noticed is there to help you either as a lesson (such as a lesson in how not to do things) or as a guide or even as a hidden source of knowledge or funding. Don’t forget, your brain filters out practically everything that has nothing to do with your interests or what is important to you. So if something caught your attention, it’s because it made its way through that filter!

Think outside your own box. Let your creativity flow by allowing yourself to think completely contrary to popular wisdom and knowledge. Yes, a hundred thousand people CAN be wrong. If an idea sparks in you and you explore it before you start critiquing or judging it with logical thought, you might just come up with something remarkable.

Move through your fear and take risks. Don’t miss out on extraordinary opportunities because you’re too afraid. Take a chance on something new; or stay where you are, living the same old life.

Are you inspired yet?
Just by focusing your energy on recognizing opportunities, they will arise. Then, you have to take a deep breath and take immediate and deliberate action. Scary? Yes! But thrilling, too, and the rewards are immense. Even if you “fail” you still move forward because you have learned a lot. And thus, THERE IS NO FAILURE. Taking “failure” out of the equation may be what it takes to get you to see opportunity not as something only a lucky few can capitalize on; but something that you can, too. Opportunities are everywhere! Be open, be aware and say YES.

How Your Story Creates (or Un-Creates) Your Goal

By Attitude, Blogpost, inspirations

What sort of stories are you telling about your goals? Are your stories full of enthusiasm, belief and action, or are they full of excuses and ‘becauses’? You may now know how important it is to tell the right story. The truth is, your Word is more powerful than you think. Have you noticed that the happiest people tell the most positive stories and the most miserable people tell stories of suffering and woe?

The thing is, it’s not the circumstances that create the story, it’s the story that creates the circumstances!

Your internal narrative and the way you talk to other people is a critical component of success. Your Word has energy behind it. If you say things like, “I’m sick and tired of… then you will actually become sick, and tired! If you say things like, “I love the challenge of…!” then you will approach the day with enthusiasm and drive. How does this work?

Try this little experiment, right now. Take a few minutes with no interruptions. Sit quietly and relax. Your first task is to say, “Nothing good ever happens to me.” Say it to yourself several times, and feel the physical reaction in your body. No matter what your mood was when you started, guaranteed, you are feeling blue now! We humans are emotional creatures. Our moods dictate our actions (otherwise it wouldn’t be so hard to stick to a diet). By creating a negative mood, you subconsciously sabotage your goals because now you just don’t feel like doing anything – because no matter what you do, “nothing good ever happens to me.”

The next step is to completely change the scenario. Paste a BIG smile on your face. I mean the biggest, cheesiest, silliest smile you can manage. It is physiologically impossible to smile and feel angry or sad! You can’t hold on to that negativity! Then, say to yourself, “Everything is coming together for me.” And feel the energy in your body change. Do you feel like taking action on your goals now? Sure you do! It feels good, and right, and the positive energy has totally transformed your ability to achieve!

Listen to yourself and see what sort of story you’re telling – do this any time you’re feel frustrated or stuck and you’ll notice that you’re telling yourself a story of drama, suffering, failure and all sorts of negativity.

Throw that story as far as you can and re-write it! We are hard-wired to tell stories. Our minds constantly attempt to explain what is going on around us – and that’s the key element right there – it’s the mind’s interpretation of an event that writes the story!

And YOU control your mind – when you are aware of what’s going on you can imprint the right thoughts in your mind, and then you can’t help but succeed!

Facts in and of themselves are just facts. Just raw data. It’s the story we create around them that dictates our experience! Think about that. If you took two people and put them in the same situation, their stories would be completely different.

Each story we tell is a complex tale that mixes our beliefs with current events, past events and emotions, and this goulash is what we tell ourselves and others. The thing is, much of the time these stories are created unconsciously and out of habit. And you can change your story, any time you want. You can go from:

  • Nothing ever works out
  • There’s too much competition, how will I stand out?
  • I wish I had time to do stuff I love
  • I would take care of myself better if I didn’t have so much work!
  • I’m not smart enough…
  • I’m not good enough…
  • It takes money to make money
  • Money is hard to come by

To:

  • Everything works out perfectly – even if it’s not how I anticipated, I receive valuable lessons from this situation.
  • For every talent and gift, there is an audience.
  • I do what I love, because I choose to focus on what is important to me
  • I make the time to take excellent care of myself
  • I’m smart and I’m always looking for new knowledge and skills
  • I’m capable and resourceful, and I’m always finding creative ways to accomplish things
  • I’m resourceful and aware and I constantly notice opportunities to make money
  • The less I worry about money, the easier it comes to me!

Listen to yourself next time you’re thinking or talking about your goals, and get in the habit of listening to yourself when you talk to other people. You may be shocked at how negative your Word is. These faulty stories are mostly based on fear, and if you change your stories to positive stories with a “can do” attitude, things will turn around for you very quickly!

5 Steps to Amplify Your Activity

By Blogpost, habits

Want to “Amplify your activity” towards your goals?

Here are 5 quick steps to make it happen:

1. Daily Dosage

Every day do something towards your goals. Choose an actity that will get you that little bit closer. No matter how big or small the activity is, just make sure it happens. This will amplify your activity, keep you focused and motivated towards your goals.

2. Daily Accoutability

The big “A” word – accountability. Keeping yourself accountable will make sure you are doing something daily. Firstly, choose someone that will support your goals. Then define your daily activity that is required (set your daily goals). Next, choose a metric for your goal that you will report. Example might be: calories eaten each day, number of sales calls made, number of dollar productive hours, or hours spent with the family. Choose a metric and send them your daily results.

3. Goals Card

Have your goals written up on a Goals Card and carry it with you everywhere. Make sure it is easy to fit into your wallet or handbag. Each time you have a spare minute (waiting at traffic lights, on the toilet, or on hold on the phone) get it out and read it. This keeps your focus on the goals numerous times throughout the day.

4. Visualization

Visualize your goal everyday. Take just 5 minutes at the beginning of each day to visualize yourself achieving your goal. Bring that internal picture of you successfully achieving that goal, associating yourself with the picture, sounds and have that amazing feeling flowing through your body of that success.

5. Weekly Review

Reviewing is extremely important when it comes to achieving your goals. This brings clarity towards your goals and makes sure you are on track or if you need to change slightly. This will be easy to do each week now that you have been reporting your activity daily. When reviewing ask yourself the 4 key reviewing questions:

a. What has been working?

b. What hasn’t been working?

c. What have you learnt?

d. What do you need to be doing differently?

There you have it… 5 quick steps to amplify your activity to fast track your goals. Start these quick steps today and watch what happens over the next two weeks… You will be amazed. Enjoy and good luck!

Seize the opportunity and achieve that goal…

By Blogpost, opportunities
Opportunity

Some goals are straightforward. You make a plan and smoothly sail from A to Z. Others require vigilance to spot opportunities and boldness to take action on them before they vaporize. Usually, people miss opportunities because they are unaware of them or they’re not trained to spot them. Sometimes opportunities are cleverly disguised as problems so start by changing your attitude about problems. Are they really problems, or lessons? Challenges are designed to make you grow and learn! That shift in mindset transforms problems from something that frustrating and paralyzing to something energizing and motivating.

People often wait for “the right time” to take advantage of opportunities. By then, it’s too late. The truth is, there’s never a perfect time. The best time to take advantage of opportunities is immediately. Don’t be scared away when you have no earthly clue what to do next! Take the step, keep your eye on the goal – the ways to achieve what you want will present themselves.
Here’s how to spot opportunities and make the most of them:

1. No matter what your goal is, you need people to provide the solutions, skills, information, knowledge and answers you need. Work on your relationships; expand your circle; become a people person even if you’re shy. Support others and they will support you, or point you in the direction of people who will support you. Seek out the out-of-the-box thinkers, the creative types who don’t take no for an answer. Avoid the naysayers.

2. Have the right mindset. Be open, curious, playful, confident, optimistic, and never give up. Be grateful for every challenge and lesson. Own your success AND your setbacks. Successful people don’t blame anyone for their success or their “failures” and they do not make excuses.

3. You must be crystal clear on what you want to accomplish in the first place. This is the only way you’re going to prime your brain to start looking for the opportunities to make it happen!

4. When you think about your goal, do you listen to the voices that say “you can’t”? What do YOU believe? Do you believe you can or can’t achieve this? Do you believe you are or aren’t good enough? Do you believe you can or can’t be in the right place at the right time for the right opportunity? If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can’t, you won’t. Identify limiting beliefs by listening to yourself as you rationalize why you can’t do something. Ask yourself, “WHY do I believe this? Is this true? What facts support this belief?” Dig down to the bottom of that belief and expose it for the delusion it is! Many limiting beliefs are learned from parents, teachers, etc. and we believe them only because we didn’t know we had a choice in the matter. Well, now you know. You can choose to believe something – or not.

5. Always be aware and vigilant. Be open to new ideas. Don’t make judgments about ideas you come across just because they’re different than anything you’ve done before. Keep an open mind – be curious about new perspectives and alternative ways of doing things.

6. Question everything. “What is interesting about this new development? What can I learn? Whom could I help? What benefit will I get from this?” These questions imprint the importance of your goal on your mind. The more important it is to you, the more your mind will seek it.

7. Embrace the “problems” – find the value, the lesson and the benefit in every single problem you have, and <poof> like magic, your problems will transform into wonderful opportunities!

8. If you notice anything out of the ordinary in your life, pounce on it like a tiger. Seize it. It came into your awareness for a reason, even if you don’t know why. Write down what you noticed and your thoughts and emotions. If you go back later and read what you wrote, you will be astounded at the wealth of guidance or insight you received. Carry a notebook with you everywhere, or use a note-taking app on your phone or iPad. DO NOT LOSE those clues.

9. Keep learning. Keep expanding your knowledge and skills. Embrace the new and unexpected. Get OUT of your comfort zone. Take calculated risks – and sometimes the “foolish” ones. Avoid comfort; seek the unknown. Don’t follow the herd, make your own path.

10. Are all opportunities the goose that laid the golden egg? No. Some just don’t work out – but even there, the lessons you learned are more valuable than the perceived setback.

11. Don’t discount the little opportunities while you sit back and wait for the big one.

12. Don’t let fear of rejection, failure or uncertainty stop you. Most of us face some level of rejection, failure and uncertainty on a daily basis. It’s no different “out there.” Except that this time, you’re going for what YOU want.

13. Think big.

14. Every opportunity is time-sensitive to some degree. Even the ones that “can wait” won’t wait for long. Make a plan and take action right away.

15. Listen to your intuition.

Take advantage of opportunities; they are the wonderful “unexpected” ways that your grandest goals will be achieved!

How to become your own project (goal) manager…

By Blogpost, management

Project_manager

As any manager knows, project audits are necessary to keep any project on track and within budget. But you don’t have to be a businessperson to implement these techniques in your own goal-setting.

Project audits in a business setting give you an overview of the state of the project and should be done frequently: as in, every day. Letting things slide can be disastrous, so stay on top of your project with a quick daily review. In your personal goals, you can use the same or similar measurements to make sure you are moving…

  • effectively (moving in the right direction)
  • efficiently (working smarter, not harder)
… toward your goal.
A project manager evaluates the health of a project based on cost, time, scope and risks.
In your personal goals, you can use the same template. A daily or at the least, weekly review can spot potential problems before they arise… and let you take care of problems while they’re still small, before they escalate into crises.
You want to achieve goals in a healthy way: that is, without upsetting the balance of your life, ruining relationships, and achieving for the wrong reasons (not being true to your Why). So play the part of a project manager even in your personal goals and analyze the following:
Cost: not just the money involved, but personal sacrifice. Personal goals necessarily take you away from your loved ones for a period of time (unless they are heavily involved in your project). You may be too busy to take care of yourself and neglect daily exercise. You may be too busy to notice that your home is in dire need of maintenance or repairs. Weigh the personal cost of your project – and enlist help whenever you can.

Time: everyone who has ever remodeled a home knows that the project is going to run up to 20% over budget, and take at least 2 months longer than you think. Hopefully you’ve factored in a little padding on the budget (if there is one) and allow yourself flexibility in case unexpected roadblocks pop up. It’s important to not freak out if you run over budget or if your time frame goes all Star Trek on you and the days seem to be about ⅓ as long as they should. Stuff happens. Roll with it, get creative and be patient. And be accountable. ARE you taking action? Or just thinking about it?

Scope: did you bite off more than you can chew? GREAT!!! Seriously, there’s no reason to hold yourself back, and if you’re totally overwhelmed by the scope of your project, then break it down into manageable chunks. Eventually it will all come together. BUT – in terms of your daily or weekly audit, are you on track with your mini-goals? Are you moving in the right direction, or are you paralyzed with indecision and fear? If you haven’t broken your goal down into manageable tasks, do it right away.

Risk: this may or may not apply to your personal goals. Obviously if you’re investing money into something, you are taking a risk. Same with athletic goals or any goal where you compete against others. You might lose. So the key here is to LEARN from the project or goal, whether you “win” or “lose.” There are valuable lessons in every single experience.

Keep on track with frequent audits and you won’t have that “oh, crap” moment when you realize that you should have laid the foundation for something weeks ago… that life is still fun and enjoyable and you’re not a slave to your goal… that you are keeping yourself accountable… and that you are maintaining balance in your life and achieving your goals in a healthy way.

Making YOUR goals unique

By Attitude, Blogpost, Goals

Unique

Unique You, Unique Goals

Have you ever compared your goals to the goals of other people? Have you judged yours based on theirs? Well, don’t. Sure, use people’s goals to inspire you, but don’t compare your goals, or your results. Everyone has a unique path in life. Don’t beat yourself up if your goals aren’t as grand as your sister’s; or as cool as your brother’s. I know it might seem obvious to not compare yourself to others, but people often have a slightly over-developed competitive streak that comes from their own insecurity, so they have to prove themselves against others. If their best friend achieves X, they have to achieve Y – or be resentful forever if they can’t. Even a more subtle variant of this kind of competition – comparing yourself to others – can be detrimental to your goals.

First, you are not them. They are not you. Focus on your goals and don’t worry about theirs. You have talents and abilities that your friends and family, your colleagues and heroes, do not have. If you take two people and they are going for the exact same goal, even if they reach the same result, their stamp on it will be different. The end result is the icing on the cake. The real magic happens along the way, when you make your goals YOURS. You give your efforts a certain “you-ness” that no one else possesses.

Second, maybe your ultimate benefits will be far higher than theirs, even if their result is “better.” You could be going for the same goal as someone more “able” than you – but says who? Maybe you are more determined. Maybe you are more creative. Maybe you will find a better solution… maybe this goal will stretch you much further than it stretches the other person, and as a result, you get more personal satisfaction and growth out of it. Goals are there to get you to grow and to satisfy some inner need. Don’t base your goal on being better than someone else – because there will always be someone who is better than YOU. Maybe not today, maybe not for years – but ultimately, someone will best your achievements, and you will be crushed.

Two people with the same goal will end up with different ripple effects. Maybe you both have the same goal, but its achievement will impact a different group of people – which is great! Always remember, for every talent, there is an audience. So be brave. Forge your own way. Get to your goal the best way you can – not by following in someone’s footsteps, but by taking inspiration from others’ achievements and making your own path. You may improve on what they’ve done, and set the stage for even greater accomplishments for people who follow YOU.

If you compare yourself against other people’s achievements, you’re bound to get discouraged. So use their accomplishments to fuel your fire. Don’t compete against others (the great skier Hermann Maier admitted that his biggest mistake whenever he skied badly was that he was trying to win against his competitors instead trying to achieve a personal best). So don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself. They may be having a “Superman” kind of day, and you may be dragging… Compete against yourself, using others’ accomplishments as “carrots.” This kind of competition is healthy. The kind where “you must lose so that I can win” is unhealthy.

Always push yourself, against yourself. Compete against the part of you that wants to quit; that wants to settle for the easy way; against the part of you that is afraid and lacks confidence. You already have the tools within you to make it happen – you just have to have the confidence to take those tools out of the toolbox and use them.

Look….Where you want to go!!!

By Blogpost, Success

Lookingforsomething

Every athlete knows this: look where you want to go. The mountain biker has a choice between looking at the line between the trees, or looking at the tree – and inevitably experiencing an abrupt and unpleasant physical encounter with said tree. The tennis player has a choice between looking at the ball (no matter if it is coming straight at her head or off into the stands) or looking at her opponent and trying to anticipate the opponent’s move – and inevitably missing the shot by being a fraction of a second too late on the backhand.

All success in sports has two key element: the athlete has to look where he (or she) wants to go, both during the physical act of the sport itself, as well as in visualizing the desired result. Elite athletes (you’ve seen this during the Olympics) spend time visualizing the downhill ski run, or the dive, or the gymnastics routine. Scientists have, in fact, discovered that you can learn something simply by visualizing it just as effectively as by physical practice!

But athletes aren’t the only ones who have to keep their eye on what they want: so do you!

That is, if you plan on accomplishing your goals. Can you clearly, vividly imagine your end result? Are you IN that mental movie? Do you believe that this mental image is as real as the blog you’re reading? Do you have the courage to look past the immediate (“I don’t have it”) and the “obvious” (“I can’t do that”) and GO FOR GOLD?

Visualization is essential to success.

There is nothing, and I sincerely mean nothing, you can’t achieve if you visualize a successful result; by the same token, you won’t achieve anything if you can’t visualize a successful result.

I can’t stress enough how important a vision board or a vision book is to success. The mind is very visually-oriented. Even our speech is full of things like “look at” or “see how” or “imagine” or “watch what.” You are conjuring up images right now about the sentence you’ve just read, based on your own experiences! This should give you a clue as to how critical visualization is. So the more visual elements you have in your workspace, home or wherever you keep reminders of your goals, the better. Of course that can include the written word, since every word or sentence is translated or converted into an image. Here’s one for you: BLOOD-RED SUNRISE. You can’t help but imagine something – based on your background, the image is good, bad, exciting, scary, whatever – but the point is, there is an image.

So go wild with your vision board. Make several of them! Or make an entire vision book, such as a small notebook full of especially colorful and evocative words and images. See what you want. See yourself IN it. Feel it. Smell it. Hear it. Taste it. Immerse yourself in it.

Visionboard
And have it.
